Jeremiah 28
Commentary from 1 father
And I will send forth against Babylon spoilers, and they shall spoil her, and shall ravage her land. Woe to Babylon round about her in the day of her affliction.
Let the archer bend his bow, and him that has armour put it on: and spare ye not her young men, but destroy ye all her host.

Which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took from this place and carried over into Babylon. Jeconiah, son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exile of Judah, who went into Babylon, I will bring back to this place, says the Lord; for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. For which the Seventy translated: Jeconiah and the exile of Judah, because I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon, briefly setting down the sense of the Hebrew truth rather than its words. Now Hananiah the 'prophet' — as he then seemed to the people — promises that not only the vessels but also King Jeconiah is to be brought back to Jerusalem, and that the yoke of the Babylonian king is to be broken, that is, his empire destroyed, and that this would come about before two years were yet completed, so that the nearness of the time of the promise might increase the greatness of the joy.

For Israel and Juda have not been forsaken of their God, of the Lord Almighty; whereas their land was filled with iniquity against the holy things of Israel.

And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet in the eyes of the priests and in the eyes of all the people who stood in the house of the Lord, and Jeremiah the prophet said: Amen, so may the Lord do; may the Lord raise up your words which you have prophesied, that the vessels may be brought back from the house of the Lord, and all the exile of Babylon, to this place! He wishes 'to be done' what the false prophet lyingly tells — for this is what 'amen' means, a word the Lord often uses in the Gospel: amen, amen I say to you —, and for the sake of the prosperity of affairs he desires that the other rather than himself be speaking the truth. Hence another prophet too testifies, saying: would that I were not a man having the spirit, and spoke a lie rather! Jonah, on the contrary, is grieved that he has lied, and is rebuked by the Lord, being shown that a lie on the prophet's part is more useful than the ruin of so great a multitude. And lest he should seem to approve the false prophet's prophecy, he adds the truth under the example of others, without insulting the liar:
Commentary on JeremiahBabylon has been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, causing all the earth to be drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore they were shaken.
Nevertheless hear this word which I speak in your ears and in the ears of all the people: the prophets who were before me and you from the beginning, and prophesied over many lands and over great kingdoms of battle and of affliction and of famine; the prophet who prophesied peace, when his word comes, the prophet will be known whom the Lord has sent in truth. Jeremiah could have said to Hananiah: 'You speak falsely, you deceive the people, you are not a prophet but a false prophet.' But had he said that, the false prophet too could have turned the same words back upon Jeremiah; therefore he does him no insult and speaks as though to a 'prophet'. 'Not only,' he says, 'am I a prophet, and you, but before me and you there were many others, among whom were Isaiah, Hosea, Joel and Amos and the rest. They prophesied,' he says, 'against many lands and kingdoms not small but great, announcing to them war and adversity and want of all things; and on the contrary there were others who promised peace and prosperity. The pronouncement of both was proved not by the flattery of a lie but by the outcome of events.' Under the example of others, then, he speaks of himself and of Hananiah: that when the end of events has come, then the truth of the prophets is shown. The Lord also said this same thing through Moses, that a prophet is shown by the fulfilment of his prophecy. And this must be noted, that not threateningly, not savagely, but with the confidence of truth he rebukes the liar and defers the matter to the future, so that those who hear may await the outcome of events.

And Hananiah the prophet took the chain — or the fork, which in Hebrew is called 'muthoth', — from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. And Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying: Thus says the Lord: so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, in two years of days, from the neck of all the nations. And Jeremiah went on his way. The Seventy did not translate 'two years'; nor did they call Hananiah 'prophet', lest, that is, they should seem to call a prophet one who was not a prophet — as if many things in the holy Scriptures were not said according to the opinion of the time to which the events reported belong, and not according to what the truth of the matter held; thus Joseph too is called in the Gospel the 'father' of the Lord, and Mary herself, who knew that she had conceived of the Holy Spirit and had answered the angel: how will this be, since I have not known a man?, says to her son: son, why have you done so to us? behold, your father and I, sorrowing, were seeking you. And at the same time the prudence of Jeremiah, and his humility and patience, are to be considered. The false prophet does him injury by deed and, snatching the fork from his neck, breaks it — which he certainly could not have done with an iron one —; this man is silent and conceals his pain; for it had not yet been revealed to him by the Lord what he should say, so that holy Scripture might tacitly show that the prophets by no means speak by their own will alone, but also by the will of the Lord, above all concerning things to come, the knowledge of which belongs to God alone. He went, he says, and withdrew on his way, as though defeated, and fulfilling that prophetic word: I became as a man who does not hear and has no reproofs in his mouth.
Commentary on JeremiahAbout four hundred years have passed since the preaching of Christ burst on the world, and during that time in which his robe has been torn by countless heresies, almost the whole body of error has been derived from the Chaldaean, Syriac and Greek languages. Basilides, the master of licentiousness and the grossest sensuality, after the lapse of so many years and like a second Euphorbus, was changed by transmigration into Jovinian, so that the Latin tongue might have a heresy of its own. Was there no other province in the whole world to receive the gospel of pleasure and into which the serpent might insinuate itself, except that which was founded by the teaching of Peter, on the rock Christ? Idol temples had fallen before the standard of the cross and the severity of the gospel. Now, on the contrary, lust and gluttony endeavor to overthrow the solid structure of the cross. And so God says by Isaiah, "O my people, they which bless you cause you to err, and trouble the paths of your feet." Also by Jeremiah, "Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every one his life," and do not believe the false prophets who say, "Peace, peace, and there is no peace," who are always repeating, "The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord." "Your prophets have foreseen false and foolish things for you. They have not exposed your iniquity in order to call you to repentance. They devour God's people like bread. They have not called on God. Jeremiah announced the captivity and was stoned by the people. Hananiah, the son of Azzur, broke the bars of wood for the present but was preparing bars of iron for the future. False prophets always promise pleasant things and please for a time. Truth is bitter, and those preaching it are filled with bitterness. For with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth the Lord's Passover is kept, and it is eaten with bitter herbs.
Against Jovinianus 2.37Prepare the arrows; fill the quivers: the Lord has stirred up the spirit of the king of the Medes: for his wrath is against Babylon, to destroy it utterly; for it is the Lord’s vengeance, it is the vengeance of his people.

And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the chain — or fork — from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying: Go, and you shall say to Hananiah: Thus says the Lord: the chain — or fork — of wood you have broken, and you will make — or I will make — in their place forks — or chains — of iron. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. And what follows: and they will serve him; moreover I have also given him the beasts of the earth, is not found in the Seventy. And in the present passage, according to the Seventy, Hananiah is not written 'prophet', nor in what follows, lest, that is, as I said before, they should seem to call a 'false prophet' a 'prophet'; but what is that to the Hebrew truth? After Jeremiah the prophet had gone on his way and swallowed the injury in silence, the word of the Lord came to him, so that the prophet should not speak in his own words to the false prophet glorying in his lie, but should say: thus says the Lord, although Hananiah too, in breaking the wooden fork, had spoken with the same authority in the sight of the Lord: thus says the Lord; for falsehood always imitates truth. And what he added: you have broken forks of wood and you will make — or you have made — in their place chains of iron, shows this: that by refusing a lesser penalty he became the cause of a greater punishment among the people. In this passage too the allegorical interpreter raves, calling the wooden forks and chains ethereal and aerial bodies, namely those of demons and of the hostile powers, but the iron forks or chains our grosser bodies, which are woven together of sinews and bones, flesh and veins, so that those from the heavenly Jerusalem who refused to undergo lesser torments according to the quality of their sin are condemned into the chains of our bodies, and endure the wailing of infancy, the bonds and filth of swaddling clothes, and serve the devil, the king of Babylon, that is, of this world — Scripture saying: the world is set in the evil one — together with the beasts of the earth, which are bound fast in the bodies of brute animals. That unlearned commentator and follower of the Grunnian slander has compelled me to set forth openly the vices of others, which before I used to speak of with reserve, leaving them to the reader's prudence.

And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet: Hear, Hananiah: the Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. Therefore thus says the Lord: behold, I will send away — or cast out — you from the face of the earth; this year you will die. And what follows: because you have spoken against the Lord. And Hananiah the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month, is not found in the Seventy, in place of which they put only: and he died in the seventh month. Here too in the Seventy Hananiah is not called 'prophet', though — according to the Hebrew — holy Scripture calls him 'prophet', even if, where Jeremiah rebukes him, saying: hear, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, he left out 'prophet'; for how could he call him 'prophet' whom he denied had been sent by the Lord? But the truth and order of the history are kept, as we said above, not according to what was, but according to what was thought at that time. 'You have deceived,' he says, 'the people with a lie, so that they would not acquiesce in God's sentence; know, therefore, that you will die this year!' If, when we die, we are freed from the prisons of our bodies, according to that testimony which the heretics interpret wrongly: bring my soul out of prison, how is death now inflicted on the false prophet as a punishment? And this too must be noted, that Jeremiah, having suffered injury from the false prophet, is silent while the word of the Lord had not yet come to him, but afterwards, sent by the Lord, boldly rebukes the liar and announces his approaching death. And as to his dying in the 'seventh' month: those who are always accustomed to interpret this number as showing 'rest' will perhaps falsely claim that he died in the 'seventh' month for this reason, that he might be freed from the evils of the body, according to the saying they bring forward as written: 'death is rest to a man'. But we know that the bodies of believers are temples of God, if indeed the Holy Spirit dwells in them.

In their heat I will give them a draught, and make them drunk, that they may be stupified, and sleep an everlasting sleep, and not awake, saith the Lord.
And bring thou them down as lambs to the slaughter, and rams with kids.
How has the boast of all the earth been taken and caught in a snare! how has Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
πῶς ἑάλω καὶ ἐθηρεύθη τὸ καύχημα πάσης τῆς γῆς; πῶς ἐγένετο Βαβυλὼν εἰς ἀφανισμὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν;
The sea has come up upon Babylon with the sound of its waves, and she is covered.
Her cities are become like a dry and trackless land; not so much as one man shall dwell in it, neither shall a son of man lodge in it.
And I will take vengeance on Babylon, and bring forth out of her mouth what she has swallowed down, and the nations shall no more be gathered to her:
and in Babylon the slain men of all the earth shall fall.
Go forth of the land, ye that escape, and stay not; ye that are afar off, remember the Lord, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
We are ashamed, because we have heard our reproach; disgrace has covered our face; aliens are come into our sanctuary, even into the house of the Lord.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will take vengeance upon her graven images: and slain men shall fall in all her land.
For though Babylon should go up as the heaven, and though she should strengthen her walls with her power, from me shall come they that shall destroy her, saith the Lord.
A sound of a cry in Babylon, and great destruction in the land of the Chaldeans:
for the Lord has utterly destroyed Babylon, and cut off from her the great voice sounding as many waters: he has consigned her voice to destruction.
For distress has come upon Babylon, her warriors are taken, their bows are useless: for God recompenses them.
The Lord recompenses, and will make her leaders and her wise men and her captains completely drunk, saith the King, the Lord Almighty is his name.
Thus saith the Lord, The wall of Babylon was made broad, but it shall be completely broken down, and her high gates shall be burnt with fire; and the peoples shall not labour in vain, nor the nations fail in their rule.
THE WORD WHICH THE LORD COMMANDED THE PROPHET JEREMIAS to say to Saraeas son of Nerias, son of Maasaeas, when he went from Sedekias king of Juda to Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign. And Saraeas was over the bounties.
And Jeremias wrote in a book all the evils which should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
And Jeremias said to Saraeas, When thou art come to Babylon, and shalt see and read all these words;
then thou shalt say, O Lord God, thou hast spoken against this place, to destroy it, and that there should be none to dwell in it, neither man nor beast; for it shall be a desolation for ever.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt cease from reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone upon it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates;
and shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and not rise, because of the evils which I bring upon it.
Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I stir up against Babylon, and against the Chaldeans dwelling therein, a deadly burning wind.
(Μασ. ΝΑ΄ .)
And it came to pass in that year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the Lord before the priests and all the people, saying: Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon; yet two years of days, and I will cause all the vessels of the Lord to be brought back to this place. Those whom the Hebrew calls 'prophets', that is 'nebeim', the Seventy translated 'false prophets', in order to make the understanding plainer. Indeed, in the present passage too he is called 'prophet', that is 'nebia', and not 'false prophet'. Now the word of the Lord comes under King Zedekiah, in the fourth year of his reign and in the fifth month — while the prophet Ezekiel was not yet prophesying in Babylon to those who had gone into exile with Jeconiah — and he has the confidence to speak in the temple of the Lord against the prophet, because he promises prosperity to the people, and lies are gladly heard, especially those that promise joyful things. Jeremiah had said that the rest of the vessels too, whether of the temple or of the royal house and of the whole people, which Nebuchadnezzar had left behind, were to be carried over to Babylon; but this man, on the contrary, promises that even those which had been carried over are to be brought back.
